WASHINGTON - D.C. investigators looking into the murders of a popular Friendships Heights couple could name a third suspect in the case.

Court documents indicate a third person was present at the crime scene, but police have not publicly named a third suspect, even though court documents indicate the second person charged in the couple's murder, 20-year-old Angela Hernandez, made a statement to police.

Hernandez appeared in D.C. Superior Court Monday, when she was assigned a public defender. She is unrelated to the first suspect in the case, Peiro Fuentes Hernandez, who is also being held.

Angela Hernandez allegedly told police she posed for this photo with Peiro Fuentes Hernandez the same weekend the Spevaks' bodies were found.
Angela Hernandez will be back at D.C. Superior Court for her preliminary hearing on January 9, 2009.

No one answered the door Monday at her Northwest Washington, but neighbors told us they often saw young men at the residence.

Police say Angela Hernandez knew Michael and Virginia "Ginny" Spevak's former foster daughter and targeted their home for a robbery. The couple's bodies were found the night of Saturday, Nov. 22, after friends said they had been unable to contact them.

A team of Metropolitan police officers returned Monday to the Spevaks' home, where undelivered newspapers sit on the front walk and police car stands watch around the clock -- grim reminders of the violence that took place here.

"It's so sudden and it's shocking, so there's a range of emotions here," said Marian Schultz, a friend of the couple's.

At an emotional service over the weekend, the Spevaks were remembered for their kindness and generosity.

"They lived a life that was full of social justice and fairness and good old-fashioned neighborliness," said a friend.
