D.C.'s Republican Party has filed a petition challenging the election of Michael Brown as an independent member of the city council.
The petition filed Monday with the D.C. Court of Appeals comes a week after the D.C. elections board certified Brown's election over the party's objections.
Brown was elected as an independent, but the GOP claims he is a Democrat and his election violates a law preventing the four at-large council members from belonging to a single party.
Brown has said his voter registration card confirms he is an independent.
D.C. Republican Committee Chairman Robert Kabel says the legal challenge is about preventing one party from monopolizing the city's government.
