New projections for an east-west transit route in Montgomery and Prince George's counties show a light-rail line could draw as many as 47,000 riders a year, and a dedicated bus line on the route could draw 45,000 passengers.
Maryland transportation officials said the latest estimates for the proposed Purple Line and compare favorably with similar transit projects underway across the country. That could help the state's case for federal money to help build the $1.8 billion line. Plans call for a 16-mile line linking Bethesda and New Carrollton. There would be stops in Silver Spring, College Park, Takoma and Langley Park and Riverdale Park.

The latest data does not address whether to use light rail or buses or how to deal with scenic trails, golf courses or college campuses in the line's path. It does not address whether tunneling under some areas could be an option.
