A Windy Start to the Week

The Washington region is trapped between high- and low-pressure fronts, making for a very windy start to the week.

The region is under a Wind Advisory until Tuesday morning, with sustained gusts up to 50 mph. Western counties are under a High Wind Warning, with gusts up to 70 mph.

As of Monday night, 264 Pepco customers were without power, including 61 in D.C., 44 in Montgomery County, and 159 in Prince George's County. In Northern Virginia, 779 Dominion Power customers were without power.

A tree fell on top of a limousine in Glen Echo Monday morning, trapping the driver. It happened about 9:15 a.m. near the intersection of Sangamore Road and Sentinel Drive. A Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson said it took crews 25 minutes to get the driver out. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to ABC 7's WeatherBug network, the region's airports are experiencing gusts in the mid-30s. The weather conditions were not causing any delays locally, according to the Federal Aviation Administration's website, but travelers headed to the Northeast are experiencing delays because of weather conditions there.

NewsChannel 8 myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Locally, gusts have already reached into the mid-50s. The Frostburg, Maryland station recorded a 55 mph gust and Germantown saw a 52 mph gust.

The windy weather reached a 46 mph gust downtown, and Silver Spring's WeatherBug station recorded a 47 mph gust.

A Montgomery County Fire and Rescue crew responded to the report of a tree which fell on top of an occupied car near the intersection of Sangamore Road and Sentinel Drive in Glen Echo. A spokesperson says the injuries were minor.

Meanwhile, wind restrictions are now in effect at the Bay Bridge. The Maryland Transportation Authority is reporting sustained winds at the bridge between 40 and 49 miles per hour.

Empty house trailers or empty box trailers are prohibited from crossing. Other vehicles subject to strong winds, such as motorcycles or vehicles with roof-mounted racks, are advised to use caution when traveling.
