(Sports Network) - Tiger Woods broke his silence Sunday by releasing a statement regarding his car accident that occurred in the early hours Friday morning.
The top-ranked golfer did not speak with the Florida Highway Patrol for a third straight day, but Woods took full blame for the incident in a statement released on his official website.
"This situation is my fault, and it's obviously embarrassing to my family and me," said Woods. "I'm human and I'm not perfect. I will certainly make sure this doesn't happen again."
Woods hit a fire hydrant and then a tree on a neighbor's property as he left his residence around 2:25 a.m. (et) Friday morning. According to multiple reports, Woods' wife, Elin, broke out a window in his SUV and then removed her husband from the vehicle.
"The only person responsible for the accident is me," the statement continued. "My wife, Elin, acted courageously when she saw I was hurt and in trouble. She was the first person to help me."
Woods also shunned rumors circling the issue, calling them "malicious" and reiterating that he wants to keep the matter private.
Woods was transported to the hospital after the crash and was released later in the day.
"[I] sustained some injuries. I have some cuts, bruising and right now I'm pretty sore," Woods said via the statement.
The 14-time major champion is scheduled to host and play in the Chevron World Challenge starting on Thursday, December 3. The tournament benefits the Tiger Woods foundation.
