WASHINGTON - A community is saying an emotional goodbye to a young boy who was killed by a bullet that went through his front door.
A distraught mother and brother stood at St. Stephen Episcopal Church in D.C. to remember Oscar Fuentes, whose favorite color was yellow, who loved to paint, watch wrestling, and play basketball. Fuentes died last Saturday after someone shot through the door of his apartment.
Many came who did not know Oscar.
Mourner Miguel Sanchez said, "A nine- year-old boy, he's not supposed to go that way."
Nine-year-old Angel Henriquez also attended the funeral and shared what he/she had in common with Oscar. "We like the same things. He like wrestling and I like wrestling. We like the same superstar."
As for the family, uncle Rufino Fuentes said, "We just don't have the words to explain the pain we feel."
When asked about the arrest made for Oscar's death, Rufino Fuentes said, "It brings a little relief but it doesn't bring our family member back."
Thursday, at the apartment where the tragedy occurred, a broken security door an intruder used to enter the building last Saturday has been replaced with a new one that requires a key to enter it.
Police say Josue Pena was that intruder and they have charged him with Oscar's death.
The family has said Oscar had two close brushes with death before Saturday: surgeries when he was three days old and at age two. But he was a fighter and came back from those, but couldn't do the same at age nine when he was shot on Saturday.
Also, a fund was started in honor of Oscar Fuentes. Right now there is $4,000 in that fund.
