WASHINGTON - A severely disabled girl is out of the intensive care unit but remains hospitalized Thursday night. Her mother believes a fellow student on a D.C. school bus stabbed her and she is demanding answers from the school system.
Last Friday a little girl arrived at Saint Coletta's School bleeding. She was taken to a hospital where doctors diagnosed her with the kind of wound which comes only from a sharp object. The injury happened on the bus ride to Saint Colleta, a school for severely handicapped children.
Last Friday, something slashed 9-year-old quadriplegic Nadja Corley's hand. "From her cut or injury she was cut or stabbed with something," said Nadja's mother, Vashtie Rowe.
Her mother says the bus driver called her and told her what happened.
"She said the little girl that cut Nadja is 17 years old and they attend the same school," said Rowe.
It took six stitches to close Nadja's hand. Two days after the incident she developed pneumonia. Doctors say there is no way to know whether the injury caused pneumonia, but in a severely handicapped child any kind of injury can lead to serious complications.
Nadja remains hospitalized.
When asked what happened to Nadja, Sharon Raimo, the CEO of Saint Colleta, said, "(Nadja) was not stabbed she cut herself."
Nadja's uncle Tshon Rowe said, "For them to say that my niece cut herself did that to her self it's crazy it's absolutely crazy there is no way she could do that."
Saint Colleta told us since the incident took place on a public school bus and the city's school system is handling it. But a representative of the public school system said she knew nothing about it.
Rowe wants to know exactly what happened to her daughter, who did it and if that person, if a student, is still in school.
"I'm just thanking God that is was not her life or her throat," said Rowe. "And I want to make sure it doesn't happen to another student and I'm definitely fearing for her safety."
We spoke with D.C. police who confirm Nadja's mother did file a police report, but they could not give us an update on an investigation.
