HUNTINGTOWN, Md. - High tide is placing a Maryland neighborhood in serious jeopardy.
Numerous homes on Beach Drive are in danger of falling into the Chesapeake Bay in the town of Piney Point. The entire community is battling remnants of a powerful nor'easter.
"It's very frightening," said resident Mary Riley. "You could be losing your house."
While some bag the sand, other residents work quickly to create barriers. But the Bay's tide is proving to be too much. The surf is creeping closer and closer to a number of vulnerable homes.
"I think we're all in a state of shock," said resident Debbie Clime. "....Felt good about getting though the hurricane season this year."
Just how bad is the erosion? Photos taken a months ago, show a tranquil 40 feet of beach. Friday night the furious Chesapeake is pounding sides of homes and part of Bill Park's deck has already been swallowed up.
"It's pretty bad. I mean it's worse then I expected," said Bill Parks.
Local fire departments are assisting with bags and lights, but nervous residents say they need more help.
"We've been asking for the National Guard all afternoon," said Riley. "We've had no outside help whatsoever to help bag sand."
The residents are appealing to the governor to provide help.
