BELTSVILLE, Md. - More than 100 dogs rescued from puppy mills in Missouri are now in the D.C. area and are looking for a new home.

The 111 dogs arrived in Sunday night to a warm welcome from the Chantilly-based A Forever-Home Rescue, which coordinated the 'dog-lift' to the D.C. area.

"Then you got the tears, because when they came out and they looked like this, and they were so happy just to be in your arms, you got everybody, the second wave," said Susan Flashman, a dog foster parent. "Who would let a dog get like this?"

The group's volunteers are fostering 65 of rescued dogs while they are rehabilitated and hopefully eventually adopted.

"The conditions they've lived in for however long they've lived in are just horrendous," said Karen Grinder, A Forever-Home Rescue's foster coordinator. "You'd never even think of showing a child those conditions."

Still many of the puppies are in good spirits and very friendly. They are in need a checkup, a bath, and a good home.

"Some would be really apprehensive about being held, because the only reason they are picked up is take them to do something with them," Grinder said. "The fact he's getting close on his own is a good sign."

Even the ones in the worst shape will be taken care of, regardless the cost. This little Chiuaha was bred so many times she can barely walk, is missing most of her fur, and has a kennel cough.

"Hopefully we'll be able to get some of this walking straightened out, we'll get the fur back, and get some weight on her," Flashman said. "She may not be perfect but she'll definitely warm somebody's lap."

It will be at least two weeks before the dogs will be up for adoption.
