WASHINGTON - D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee just announced she's getting married and her fiance is the mayor of Sacramento, California. The announcement is leading to questions about her future in Washington.
Rhee has been in the news because she was mad at the DC Council or kids were mad at her for firing their teachers. Now, the divorcee and mother of two, is not denying a story in the Washington Post Friday that she is the fiance of Sacramento Mayor and former NBA player Kevin Johnson.
It is not exactly a surprise.
D.C. resident Paul Woodhull said, "You know, that they've been going out for a while and that's great."
"And he's the mayor of Sacramento, too? Oh that's nice. Congratulations," added Ibit Hall, a D.C. resident.
Rhee turned down our interview request Friday, but a year ago the issue of romance came up.
We asked, Exactly what is your relationship to Kevin Johnson?"
Rhee replied, "We are very good friends."
We asked because a Sacramento newspaper said she was out there a lot. She had said, "Well...Kevin and I have been friends a long time and I like to help him when I can."
She played if off, but now folks say they're happy for her.
"It's a great time for anybody to get engaged and get married," Juliet Mohnkern, a D.C. Charter School teacher. "I just got engaged and it's super exciting"
Well, most of them.
"We can't have that," said one woman. "Us sisters can't have all this stuff going on."
Some people think Johnson's not done too badly for himself..
"Wow, Kevin has come up. He's come up a long way," said Nickie Palmer, a basketball fan.
So when is the big day and what does this all mean for her job as head of D.C. Public Schools?
She told the Post no date has been set and she's going to continue to run the school for the foreseeable future.
