Alexandria (web|news), Va. - Fairfax County (web|news) police have charged a local teacher with taking indecent liberties with a child and now both the police and parents of local children want to know whether or not this was an isolated incident.

On Nov.10, an eight-year-old boy reported that he was in the locker room of the Spring Hill Recreation Center around 8:30 p.m., changing clothes after going swimming, when he was approached and touched inappropriately by a naked man. The boy was not physically injured, and later that evening he reported the incident to his parents.

The child gave a description of the man to Fairfax County police, who released a composite sketch and flyers seeking information about the suspect.

On Tuesday, Dan Hegarty, 39, of Alexandria turned himself in to the police. He was identified with assistance from the public after the composite sketch was circulated.

The picture of Hegarty's life has him surrounded by children. A longtime seventh grade math teacher at the exclusive Browne Academy in Alexandria, Hegarty is also a devoted and tremendously popular coach and referee for boys hockey in Montgomery County (web|news) . His involvement with so many local children has made the news of his arrest extremely upsetting to parents.

While no one answered the door at the home where Hegarty lives in Alexandria, his neighbors said it may not be an accident that the single man was involved in the lives of so many children. "They put themselves there on purpose in order to get close to the kids," said one neighbor.

Right now, there's no information that Hegarty has been involved with any other children.
