What neighbors couldn't see they could hear.
"Five or six round going off -- rapid, rapid fire," said Greg Schumpert.
Nicole Johnson was about to take her mother to the store when one of the bullets came through her window.
"My momma fell, from ducking down, and we went in the bathroom and that's when we noticed the shells were inside," she said.
Seconds later, Herbert Edgar said he saw two teenagers running down B Street, screaming they'd been shot.
"Me and a neighbor were standing on the corner talking, and then, all of the sudden, I see the two boys running by me," he said.
The boys ran down to Benning Road and into Superior Barber Shop, where they sought help. One boy had been shot in the shoulder, the other in the chest.
"This is Southeast, you know. I mean, things happen. We have it all the time. Gun fire around here is just like in Compton, we don't pay it no mind, too much," said Schumpert.
Ward 7 D.C.Council member Yvette Alexander does pay attention. She’s pushing for more surveillance cameras in the neighborhood.
“From what I understand, there were cameras here but the wires were cut. They’re not working,” she said.
Police have not released any possible motive for the shooting.
One 18-year-old victim remains hospitalized in serious condition. A 17-year-old boy is in critical condition.
