Meanwhile, Tai's family and friends, who laid him to rest Saturday afternoon, say the arrest of Hernandez does not ease the pain. They say it only leaves them with questions and that same pain of knowing for them justice will never be served.
"Even though he's captured, and everything, it doesn't ease my heart or my family because it doesn't bring him back," said Tai's sister, Quy Lam. "What purpose do they serve just shooting on innocent people," asked Quy Lam, Tai's sister. "Does that ease their soul?
On Friday, less than a week after his murder, the 14-year-old was crowned homecoming king--an accomplishment he will never be able to bask in the glory of.
My little baby; he's never coming back to me," said Ngoc Lam, Tai's mother.
Officials say the crime still remains under investigation and additional arrests may be made. They also say the efforts of the community helped track down Lam's killer.
Tai Lam and two other teens became the target of the gunman while on a Montgomery County Ride on bus last Saturday night shortly after 11 p.m., police say.
According to the investigation, Lam and a group of ten to12 friends were riding on the bus when another group of four to five males got on the bus at two different locations. The investigation has revealed that the two groups got into a verbal argument during the short time they were on the bus together. The group of four to five men got off at the Piney Branch Road and Arliss Street stop, but not before Hernandez turned toward the bus and opened fire, killing Lam and injuring two others.
Police say it does not appear that the group Lam was apart of is affiliated with any gangs.
All three victims were transported to area trauma centers. The two surviving victims, a 14-year-old male and 15-year-old male, were released from the hospital and are expected to recover from their injuries. Investigators are still asking anyone with information about the crime to call police at (240) 773-5070. Callers may remain anonymous.
