"Between roughly 7:00 and 9:00, we saw unprecedented numbers of people come through here to cast their ballots," observed Fairfax County election official Dawn Thomas.
The last-minute calling and campaigning was a frenzy of activity by both campaigns. Campaign worker Jackie Solomon put it succinctly: "As Virginia goes, so the country will go." Campaign workers were on the ground at Metro stations, catching early commuters and voters already headed to the polls.
In Battleground Virginia, the race for president has been fierce, particularly on the front lines of Fairfax County. The state used to be a Republican stronghold, but for the first time in 44 years, the Commonwealth is in contention.
Virgina voting will close at 7:00 p.m.
