Falls Church, Va. - The line stretched the length of several hallways inside Marshall High School, well before the Virginia polls opened at six this morning. Some voters had a level of excitement usually seen from the candidates themselves. "I'm really excited! I couldn't wait to get up this morning to go vote," laughs one voter.

Supporters were seen putting up signs before 5:00 outside polling places, and voters were beginning to line up at 5:30 in Falls Church.

Election officals are expecting record turnout this year, on the basis of massive new voter registration and early voting numbers. 80,000 early votes were cast by Saturday in Fairfax County (web|news) alone.

"Between roughly 7:00 and 9:00, we saw unprecedented numbers of people come through here to cast their ballots," observed Fairfax County election official Dawn Thomas.

The last-minute calling and campaigning was a frenzy of activity by both campaigns. Campaign worker Jackie Solomon put it succinctly: "As Virginia goes, so the country will go." Campaign workers were on the ground at Metro stations, catching early commuters and voters already headed to the polls.

In Battleground Virginia, the race for president has been fierce, particularly on the front lines of Fairfax County. The state used to be a Republican stronghold, but for the first time in 44 years, the Commonwealth is in contention.

Virgina voting will close at 7:00 p.m.
