Maryland Senate Considers Amendments to Slots Legislation
posted 1:38 pm Thu November 08, 2007 - ANNAPOLIS, Md.
The Maryland Senate has given preliminary approval to holding a November 2008 referendum on slot machine gambling and is moving toward voting on Governor Martin O'Malley's plan to address the state's budget deficit.
A final vote is expected later Thursday. During the slots debate, the Senate voted 30-17 to reject an amendment by Howard County Republican Allan Kittleman to move one of five proposed slots sites from Ocean Downs Racetrack near Ocean City to Rosecroft Raceway in Prince George's County.
Somerset County Republican Lowell Stoltzfus argued that having slot machines near Ocean City will harm local businesses, and that Rosecroft would raise much more money because the area has a much higher population.
But Democrats said the locations chosen by the governor were an important part of a statewide strategy to keep money from leaving Maryland.
On a 36-8 vote, the Senate also rejected an amendment approving slots without a referendum.
