WASHINGTON - Metropolitian Police Department officials are investigating a serious accident in Northeast Washington that has sent seven people to the hospital and shut down several roads in the area.
The two-car accident happened in the 6 a.m. hour at the intersection of North Capitol Street and Missouri Avenue and may have involved a pedestrian being struck, officials confirm.
Two of the people involved in the accident have life-threatening injuries. The other five have minor injuries, including a child who was a passenger.
The accident has shut down the northbound and southbound lanes on Missouri Avenue from Fort Totten to North Capitol Street and North Capital Street from Gallatin to New Hampshire Avenue.
Emergency response crews are on site. DDOT officers have been dispatched to assist with area traffic.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and take alternate routes and detours including: Riggs Road, Piney Branch Road, New York Avenue, Rhode Island Avenue, Bladensburg Road, Michigan, Georgia Avenue and 16th Street.
Drivers may also avoid delays by using Michigan Avenue to Irving Street then taking southbound N. Capitol Street.
The investigation is ongoing.
