STAFFORD, Va. - It was a long night for many in Stafford County who waited in long lines to get their children and other loved ones the swine flu vaccine.
NewsChopper 7 was over Colonial Forge High School where the lines wrapped around the building Thursday night. The numbers tell an incredible story about demand for the the H1N1 vaccine in this community. It's estimated that more people were turned away than were vaccinated.
A bird's-eye view of Colonial Forge High School was all that was needed to understand why the H1N1 virus has so many people scared.
"They say get the kids vaccinated and that's what I want to do. [I want to] make sure she's got it," said Victor Copeland, a parent.
But Copeland and several hundred other parents never made it inside to get the highly desired vaccine for their children. All 567 vaccines were used up only 90 minutes into a clinic that was scheduled to last three hours.
"I thought It was going to take awhile to get in here," said Zachary Smith, a student.
Smith was among the last to get stuck with a concoction designed to ward off a flu strain that has killed dozens of children in the United States this year.
Hearing that eases one mother's mind. "It's great -- it's great," said Tonya Kenon, a parent. "Both my kids got it and that's really what I wanted."
But many others showed up on time to find out the county's supply of H1N1 vaccine was gone. "I just came over here to get my daughter the vaccine and [we] realized it's all gone," said Joanna Chesley, a parent.
The county hopes to get more of the vaccine but no one knows if or when that will happen. That means Monday's H1N1 vaccine clinic at Mountain View High School has been canceled.
