Michael Dwayne Logan, 31, pleaded guilty August 11 to unauthorized recording of motion pictures.
Investigators from the Motion Picture Association of America say they busted the Baltimore man at the Regal Gallery Place Stadium 14 theater last November. Logan had smuggled a high-definition video camera in to the the movie "Enchanted", and had taped about 50 minutes of the film, according to investigators.
Investigators also linked Logan's camera to a pirated copy of the film "28 Weeks Later", which MPAA investigators had purchased undercover in New York City.
The Motion Picture Association of America had sought $48,632 in restitution. But the judge ruled the MPAA did not have a rightful claim to the restitution because the movie's producers, not the MPAA, had been wronged.
The amount represented the cost to the theater for the right to display the films at issue, according to the U.S. Attorney's office.
The judge also sentenced Logan to 12 months of supervised released following his incarceration. During his probation, Logan will be banned from entering any movie theater.
