Washington - A rash of violent crimes in Adams Morgan has city leaders and police calling for a crackdown, including increased patrols in the area.

This weekend, police are converging on the streets of Adams Morgan after the crime spike. "I've certainly heard of the gangs and the all the shootings going on in Adams Morgan," said resident Lisa Mitigy.

Since September 1, a small stretch of bars and restaurants has seen about a dozen street robberies and assaults, including 15 shootings. "It was like one and everybody was out having a good time and there was gun fire again," said resident Natalie Ashby.

The latest shooting left a bullet hole on the outside all of Madams Organ. "Something like this happens and again, no one is arrested," said Bill Duggan, owner of Madam's Organ.

Duggan says the trouble is not coming from inside the bars, but rather from other areas of the city. "Fifteen, sixteen, seventeen [year olds], they're definitely not coming out of the bars. They're coming out here late at night, if anything the people coming out of the bars are the victims of these crimes."

Police Chief Cathy Lanier (web|news|bio) is promising more acting, but is asking the public and establishments in the area to be more responsible when it comes to drinking. "If you had way to much to drink and you come out of these bars at 2 and 3 in the morning, it only creates more opportunities for people are who looking to prey on patrons that are walking the neighborhood," said Lanier.

Resident Lisa Mitigy quickly noticed the sudden large police presence. She just hopes it's not a short term solution. "This is a place that everyone comes to eat and socialize and be out in the street so it's great to see them here actually."

Residents and businesses are afraid the weekend blitz will only last for the weekend and then fear the crime will leak back into the area. Police have made a few arrests, but police are looking for a group of juveniles who they believe are behind a number of the shootings.
