D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty is proposing budget cuts for a number of city agencies as he seeks to close a projected $131 million budget gap.
The biggest proposed cuts include $4 million from the police department; nearly $3 million from the health department, and $2.6 million from the transportation department.
The D.C. Child and Family Services Agency, which is trying to reduce a backlog of cases in order to stay out of federal receivership, is set to lose $1.5 million.
D.C.'s chief financial officer has attributed much of the budget shortfall to a projected decline in income tax revenue, partly because of turmoil in the stock market.
The city council will hold a public hearing on the mayor's proposals.
