Kanepi Advances In Tokyo

(Sports Network) - Fifth-seeded Kaia Kanepi of Estonia highlighted Monday's first-round winners at the $175,000 Japan Open Tennis Championships.
Kanepi came from behind to beat Czech Lucie Safarova 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on the hardcourts at Ariake Colosseum, which hosted the WTA Tour's Pan Pacific Open just two weeks ago.
Two other results saw Japanese wild card Ayumi Morita handle New Zealand's Marina Erakovic 6-1, 6-4 and Poland's Marta Domachowska erase another Japanese wild card, Aiko Nakamura, 6-4, 7-5.
A match between Czech Iveta Benesova and Belgian Yanina Wickmayer was postponed until Tuesday because of rain on Day 1.
On Tuesday, other opening-round matches will come for the likes of top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and last week's Seoul champion Maria Kirilenko of Russia.
France's Virginie Razzano stunned American star Venus Williams in last year's finale here.
The 2008 Japan Open champion will collect $28,000.
