At the Lincoln Memorial Thursday, flowers lay at the spot where, 45 years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. stood and made his famous 'I Have a Dream' speech.
People like Forrestville resident Kevin Burns came to the spot to ponder another historic event, Barak Obama's acceptance speech.
"I just had to come down here because it's a great moment for our country, for our people," Burns said.
While Burns didn't attend the 1963 speech, many Washingtonians did.
"The crowds were phenomenal," recalled Dorothy Gilliam, a retired Washington Post reporter, who said she marched that day.
"Did you in 1963 think you would see a day like this?" asked ABC 7/NewsChannel 8 reporter Sam Ford. "No," she replied, "I never envisioned [it]"
Another marcher, Muriel Sweatt, agreed.
"Our heavenly Father has watched over us all of these years, and the people are really coming together and living Martin Luther King's dream," she said. "It's a dream come true."
John Wilson, who attended the march as a teen with his dad, said he believed the day would come, "But I never thought it would come upon us so quickly," he added.
