A D.C. woman has admitted using her job in the District tax office to create fake income tax refund checks for her boyfriend.
Forty-one-year-old Jacqueline Wright pleaded guilty to a mail fraud charge Tuesday in U.S. District Court. According to federal guidelines, she could face 15- to 21 months in prison. Under her plea agreement, she must make restitution.
Prosecutors say the scam cost the D.C. government about $184,000.
Wright's boyfriend, 32-year-old Michael Clark of District Heights, pleaded guilty to mail fraud last month.
Authorities say the theft is not connected to the embezzlement of nearly $50 million from the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue. Former tax office manager Harriette Walters is awaiting trial in that case.
