A Washington police officer has been charged with stealing more than $178,000 by falsely saying she worked overtime to catch speeding drivers.
Federal prosecutors say Karin Coppens, a 23-year veteran, got overtime pay by saying she did extra work for the department's photo radar program. But, according to charging documents, she was assigned to the training academy and never did the radar detail.
Prosecutors say Coppens submitted 94 time sheets covering more than 3,400 hours for work she falsely claimed to have performed from August 2004 through June 2008. Prosecutors also allege that Coppens forged the signature of a supervisor on paperwork.
Coppens's attorney, Harold Martin II, said his client was on sick leave, but would not comment more on the case.
