D.C. police swarmed the intersection of Good Hope Road and 13th Street in Southeast around noon Tuesday, after they spotted two middle-aged women leaving a Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck. The truck's owner had been found dead a few blocks away.
Police grabbed the women inside Ace Check Cashing.
"They grabbed them as soon as they walked into the store," said an employee.
The body was identified as that of 56-year-old John Skinner of Oglethorpe Street NE. It was found about 7 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of 18th and U Streets Southeast, about six blocks from where police spotted his vehicle.
Residents say they heard gunshots about 3 a.m. Tuesday, but police were not called until about 7 a.m., when someone spotted a body in an alley.
Residents say gunshots are common in the neighborhood.
"Sad to say, but we hear them so much around here, we've grown immune to them," said one neighborhood resident who did not want to be identified.
The women have not been identified by police. It’s unclear if they are suspects in Skinner's murder.
