The Washington Capitals (web|news) on Thursday signed center David Steckel to a one-year contract extension for the 2009-10 season. Steckel, 26, was already under contract with the Capitals for the upcoming season but would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency in 2009. Steckel had five goals and seven assists in 67 games last season, his first full season in the NHL. He won 56.3 percent of his face-offs, ranking first on the team and seventh in the league. Steckel was a first-round draft pick by Los Angeles in 2001 and made his Capitals debut in 2005.
