Immigrant advocacy group Casa de Maryland is receiving a $1.5 million donation from Citgo Petroleum Corp., a subsidiary of Venezuela's national oil company that is overseen by President Hugo Chavez.

Kim Propeack, advocacy director for the Montgomery County (web|news) -based group, said Monday it's the largest corporate donation the organization has received. The funds will be used to strengthen Casa's social service, small business and vocational training programs over the next three years.

Patrick Lacefield, a county spokesman, said that in 2007 county officials declined to interact with Venezuela after the Venezuelan government expressed interest in possibly funding some county programs.
