Loudoun County
(web | news) , Va. - Loudoun County Supervisors have approved plans to build a minor league baseball stadium near the intersection of Routes 7 and 28.
"I think we're ready for it - to have this kind of facility in the county. So that the tax dollars are spent here in the county, the jobs are here in the county and you don't have to spend a lot of money going downtown to a National's game," said Tori Waters, Supervisor, Broad Run District, Loudoun County.
Currently nothing but an empty field, the stadium is slated to open in May 2011. The stadium will be part of a 420 acre, mixed-use development by Kincora. Plans call for a blend of retail, residential and office spaces. The roughly $30 million stadium will become home to a new minor league team affiliated with the Atlantic league.
"The Atlantic league is very competitive. As Brooks Robinson said at the meeting Monday night, it's double-A pitching with triple-A hitting," said Bob Farren, Managing Parner, VIP Baseball.
Farren said most tickets will cost less than $10. "Our goal will be to have ticket prices less than what it costs to go to the movies."
"I've never been to a minor league game before. I've been trying to go actually, so maybe this will be a good opportunity for that," said Arlington resident Ben House.
The stadium will also host regional baseball tournaments and other events like concerts, festivals and high school graduations. "I think it will bring people together," said Loudoun resident Ben Nightingale.
County officials think the Kincora complex will compliment rather than compete with the Dulles Town Center, located just across the street. "Kincora's not trying to be a regional mall like Dulles Town Center."
In a statement, a Dulles Town Center spokesman said the town center is pleased that the tax base in the Route 28 corridor continues to grow. They said they welcome baseball to Loudoun County and wish the team well.
Another major, mixed-use development called One Loudoun is being built west of the Kincora complex, along Route 7 and Loudoun County Parkway.
