WASHINGTON - There is more fallout from the arrest of D.C. Coucilmember Marion Barry. The local City Paper is raising questions about money Barry directed to non-profit groups.
It has not been an easy week for Barry and now there is word that D.C. councilmembers will be investigating whether the Ward 8 councilmember did anything wrong in connection with agreements made between six nonprofit groups and the city.
The Washington City Paper reports that Barry allegedly funneled $450,000 worth of legislative earmark money to groups that exist only on paper.
The paper reports that Barry got council funding for the groups in June of 2008, five months before the groups were registered with the city. Each of the groups received about $75,000 from the city.
Most Ward 8 residents agree if there was any wrong doing there should be an investigation
"Sure because it's coming out of the tax payer's pocket," said one resident.
City documents list Sharon Wise, an associate of Barry's, as the project director for two of the nonprofit groups. The City Paper article says Wise's signature is attached to three of the contracts, and calls one of the signatures a forgery.
Wise would only say that she will testifying at a council hearing on Monday.
Meanwhile, Barry insists he has done nothing wrong.
"I have not read the city paper. I tell you what, everything I have done has been legal," Barry said.
The D.C. City Council will be holding hearings on the nonprofits on Monday.
