WASHINGTON - Big summer sales combined with a day off from work mean a rush to area malls, one day before the Fourth of July.
Stores are slashing prices 30, 40 and even 70 percent as they attempt to attract budget-conscious buyers. "We're looking to get some bargains, so we came to the mall," said Pittsburgh resident Anthony Battle.
He and his wife drove from the Three Rivers city to spend the weekend in D.C. Their first stop was the Westfield Mall. "Came straight off the interstate and here we are," said Battle.
With in no time, they purchased a few pairs of shoes marked down about 70 percent. Battle says the bargains are bigger than he expected. "It was worth the trip. We saved money and we're going to look for some more things."
The mall's spokeswoman says the economy is driving the Fourth of July holiday sales. "I think that people are just not opening up their wallets as much as they should," said Kafi Virtue, Westfield Mall marketing director.
Many people say clearance markdowns are the only reason they can afford to shop. "I came out for all the great deals going on this holiday weekend," said Damascus resident Nicole Corrado.
The sales even attract buyers from far and wide. "With the recession, I guess it's better to get the sales when you can," said Kansas City resident Robert Harrell.
Many malls are only open holiday hours on the Fourth of July. If you decide to check out the discounts, be sure to double check the store hours as well.
