WASHINGTON - Some District residents got an unexpected surprise when they recently received a check for the exact amount they owe in taxes.
Several people who live in the District received refund checks when they say, they actually owe the city money. One of those refund checks was sent to the home of D.C. City Council Member David Cantania who says he was just as surprised as everyone else.
One District resident reportedly received more than $2,800. The man who got the check returned it and wrote a letter to his Council Member saying, "This might be viewed as a one-time error except that several years ago the exact same thing happened to me."
Then the man wrote, "The "coincidence" of this happening to both members of our household within a few years concerns me. It suggests that there is a problem with the process..."
D.C.'s Office of Tax and Revenue hasn't said just how many people got a refund check incorrectly and there's no word on how many people kept the checks and cashed them.
"That's really unfortunately not surprising. I think that they need to get a handle on what's happening with our money," said Courtney Anderson, a D.C. resident.
"This is ridiculous, this is ridiculous," added James Peters, a D.C. resident. "I'm just floored. I don't believe that if they owed $2,800 they got back a check for $2,800."
The tax office says they are investigating the error and don't believe it to be widespread.
