"The Turf" has seen it's last day in Downtown Silver Spring due to a decision by Montgomery County (web|news) to repave the fake-grass hangout with a plaza and ice rink.
The 35,000-square- foot turf was rolled out three years ago at the corner of Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street. Now, the main location for the Silver Spring Jazz Festival will be paved over starting in spring of 2009.
The project will include a pavilion that would house an ice skating rink for less than half of the year and a plaza for events the rest of the time.
Montgomery County will throw a going-away party for The Turf, tonight from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
