(Sports Network) - Candace Parker scored 40 points, pulled down 16 rebounds and had five blocked shots, but the Los Angeles Sparks needed overtime to beat Houston, 82-74. Lisa Leslie added 13 points for the Sparks, who have won back-to-back contests, moving within a half-game of San Antonio for first place in the Western Conference.

Parker shot 15-of-23 from the field, but it was Leslie who took over in OT as she scored five points.

NewsChannel 8 myTAKE - What's Your Opinion? Tina Thompson tallied 21 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Comets, losers of two in a row. Sancho Lyttle added 12 points in defeat.

Houston wasted a 12-point third quarter lead, and Parker forced OT by making 1-of-2 free throws in the waning moments of regulation.

The Sparks had the opening eight points of the extra session, including five straight from Marie Ferdinand-Harris as LA capped its seven-game homestand on a winning note.
