A flight delayed by late crew members was later canceled when passengers got rowdy and the crew refused to fly, said passengers.
"It was horrific," recalled passenger Tim Chandler.
American Airlines flight 1908 from Miami to New York never made it off the ground Sunday night. When the crew showed up 75 minutes late, some passengers gave them the 'Bronx cheer'.
"[E]veryone started to boo them," recalled passenger Diane Chandler. "And then they closed them behind glass doors, and they kind of threatened us that they weren't going fly because of the way people were acting. Some people got very agitated."
Things got so testy, the crew was afraid to set foot on the plane and they refused to fly, said passengers. Crew members reportedly said they would not work in a "hostile environment."
"I wouldn't think they were hostile," said Tim Chandler. "You know, they booed because they were an hour and fifteen minutes late. When you want to leave at 9-45, it's 11 o'clock, they show up, so obviously, people are a little upset."
Many passengers didn't make it back to New York until Monday night. Some passengers said American Airlines didn't seem to care. The passengers also complained that while they arrived at LaGuardia, their baggage was sent to Kennedy Airport.
"We deserve better service," said passenger Reggie Coronado.
American Airlines has not said why the flight crew was late in the first place.
