Authorities have identied the 22-year-old bicyclist who was struck and killed by a trash truck in D.C. Tuesday as Alice Swanson of the city's Mount Pleasant neighborhood.
Swanson was an intern at the Middle East Institute.
Sources say Swanson was riding on the sidewalk on R Street, parallel to the truck. When the light turned green for both lanes, Swanson rode into the crosswalk just as the truck was making a right turn.
Sources believe the woman may have been in the driver's blind spot .
There was a desperate effort to save the woman's life. Police say that a secret service agent at a nearby Starbucks ran over to the scene, pulled the woman from underneath the truck, and tried to perform CPR.
