Anne Arundel County police officers are being urged to help save gas to help the county government cut costs.
County Executive John Leopold and Police Chief Col. James Teare want officers to increase their foot patrols and keep the air conditioning in their patrol cars turned off, except when the heat is oppressive.
Officers are also being asked to remove unnecessary items from their vehicles to cut excess weight, and they're being told to roll up the windows while driving at high speeds to cut wind resistance.
Lastly, officers are being asked to carpool to crime scenes and training exercises.
