SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. - Spotsylvania police say that two deputies confronted a man with a gun at a local hotel swimming pool on Friday evening.
The deputies responded to the Days Inn at 5316 Jefferson Davis Highway after receiving a call about a man with a gun. Bystanders on the scene directed them to the swimming pool, where a man later identified as Charles Hunt of Oak Hill, West Virginia stood near the pool holding a .38-caliber handgun which police saw him tuck into his waistband.
There were several adults and children in the pool as the officers confronted Hunt and ordered him to the ground at gunpoint.
At that point, a woman ran towards the officers, screaming at them to stop. The officers told her to get to the ground but she refused. She was later identified as Nicole Hicks, Hunt's girlfriend.
After more deputies arrived on the scene, both Hunt and Hicks were arrested. The gun in Hunt's waistband was found to be loaded. Hicks and Hunt told police that Hunt had the gun because they did not feel safe at the hotel.
Hicks was charged with obstruction of justice, while Hunt was charged on several counts including brandishing a firearm and being drunk in public. Hicks was released on a summons and Hunt was held at the Rappahannock Regional Jail.
