D.C. officials say hundreds of AIDS-related deaths from 2000 to 2005 went unreported because of an inadequate tracking system.

Of the 2,460 deaths from AIDS-related illnesses during that period, 1,337 had not been reported. That's according to a study from the D.C. Department of Health and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Officials found the reporting gap after reviewing all death certificates from 2000 to 2005, in an attempt to locate deaths that appeared to have been related to AIDS.

Shannon Hader of the city health department's HIV/AIDS Administration says the city is working to improve its reporting system.
