Members of the D.C. Council are concerned about plans to centralize the monitoring of thousands of city video cameras at the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency.
The Council voted Tuesday to set limits on the project to protect privacy rights. Under the council measure, the video images from schools, highways, public buildings and public housing projects would be governed by the same guidelines in place for the city's 92 police cameras.
However, councilman Phil Mendelson doubts the new restrictions will have much effect. He predicts city officials will find a way to ignore the regulations.
Authorities want to centralize the monitoring of the cameras to save money and improve emergency management.
