A teenager was hit by lightning in fierce storms that ripped through Prince George's County and surrounding areas on Saturday.
The seriously injured teen was reportedly hit by lightning in District Heights, where he was was transported to an area trauma center with serious injuries. In Brandywine, an adult male died in a single-car crash during the height of the storm.
Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department said they responded to hundreds of incident because of the severe storms. Fire/EMS processed nearly 250 calls during an 8-hour period, compared to 350 calls for a normal 24-hour day.
The National Weather Service (web|news) said two storms hit right after each other. The first storm, just after 2 p.m., moved into the southern half of the county with large wind gusts, torrential rain and small hail. A wind gust of 45 MPH from D.C., across Clinton, Fort Washington and Brandywine led to widespread damage, including branches and wires down.
The most damaging wind gust from a microburst hit the Friendly and Potomac Airfield at 80 MPH. It caused dozens of trees to be snapped or uprooted in a uniform direction. A number of small planes were blown free from being tied down and damaged.
The second storm, according to the National Weather Service, produced a microburst just before 2:30 about two miles northeast of Fort Washington. The area around the Livingston Shopping Center was hit by 80 MPH winds, causing trees to be uprooted and sending hail flying.
Firefighters, along with the Department of Public Works and utility companies, helped clear downed trees from roads and help homeowners remove hazards from their yards.
