FAIRFAX, Va. - A group of new immigrants were sworn in as U.S. citizens Friday in Fairfax County
(web | news) , and local leaders hope it's the first of many similar ceremonies.
As they raise their hands to take the oath of allegiance, the new Americans know this is the last step in a journey of miles, courage and hard work. And for Premi Hira of the United Kingdom, the impact of this moment sparks emotions that cannot be measured.
"I think those who haven't been down the path, I don't think they quite understand {that} the journey is well worth it," Hira said.
The event marks the first time Fairfax County has hosted a naturalization ceremony for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. The idea was initiated by the Asian American History Project which represents the county's largest minority population.
"This is a great way to outreach to the community and to promote and show people that the naturalization process is really like," said Ted Kim with USCIS.
"Our new Americans are constantly replenishing this country and putting back into the community," said Sharon Bulova, Fairfax County board chair.
The certificate of citizenship is a precious possession for Jose Flores, who immigrated from El Salvador.
"I believe that many people like me would like to have this opportunity, but it's always mattered if you are willing to continue moving forward," Flores said.
