The director of the Vermont Forensic Laboratory is defending the lab's work in analyzing DNA evidence at the heart of the case against a man accused of raping and killing a University of Vermont student from Virginia.

Under cross-examination, Eric Buel acknowledged that the lab had made mistakes and lost evidence in other cases but that he had no reason to believe mistakes were made handling evidence in the killing of Michelle Gardner-Quinn.

The 21-year-old Gardner-Quinn of Arlington, Va., was killed in October 2006.

Thirty-seven-year-old Brian Rooney is on trial, charged with aggravated murder in her death.
