A major commuter route was closed Thursday night after a water main break at the heart of evening rush hour.
Chain Bridge Road between Glebe Road and the George Washington Parkway was blocked while crews raced against the clock to have everything fixed by the morning commute.
The gushing water was quickly capped and turned the leak into a trickle, but crews still had to actually fix the line.
The break happened right when many in the region were heading home from work. Chain Bridge was open for drivers coming from D.C. into Virginia using southbound Glebe Road. Virginia drivers traveling northbound on Glebe Road toward Chain Bridge will be detoured at Military Road.
The broken line is a 12 inch water main that runs along Chain Bridge Road. The water, so forceful, caused some damage to the road, forcing the closure.
About 20-25 homes along Chain Bridge between Glebe Road and the county line lost water supply for some time. Arlington County's primary drinking water supply was not effected by the break. The broken line is not a major supply line for the county.
