A Baltimore County fire official says more than 200 residents of a Towson high-rise may not be able to return home for days after a three-alarm fire in an underground electrical conduit.

The fire was reported around 1 p.m. Sunday at the 15-story Virginia Towers apartments, where most of the residents are elderly.

Division Chief Michael Robinson says the fire was in an underground electrical conduit that feeds the building, but carbon monoxide from the fire filtered throughout the building.

He says BGE has isolated the fire and electricity will have to be shut off while repairs are made.

Robinson says the 75 people who were home when the building was evacuated were taken to a nearby senior center. He says the county has arranged for residents to stay at a nearby hotel if they can't return home Sunday evening.
