(Sports Network) - The New York Yankees announced Thursday that a second examination of starting pitcher Phil Hughes -- who was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday -- revealed a fractured rib. Hughes was placed on the DL with what was originally believed to be a strained right oblique, but X-rays and MRIs showed that he had a stress fracture of his ninth rib on the right side.
Hughes is 0-4 with a 9.00 earned run average in six starts this season for the Yankees. The 21-year-old has allowed 34 hits and 23 runs -- 22 earned -- in 22 innings on the hill in 2008.

Right-hander Darrell Rasner will be called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes- Barre to take Hughes' place in the rotation and will start Sunday against Seattle.
