Philanthropists say they have raised nearly $29 million for construction of a new Capital Area Food Bank facility in Northeast Washington.
It will be located about a half-mile from the current food bank warehouse and will double the food bank's storage capacity. It will also have facilities to serve hot meals.
Construction is expected to begin this summer.
Marriott International chairman and chief executive J.W. Marriott Jr. has donated an additional $1 million, bringing his total donation to more than $3 million. Marriott said Tuesday he is passionate about eliminating hunger.
Food bank president Lynn Brantley says the slow economy has pushed demand for food sharply higher in recent months.
The food bank provides food to about 700 agencies.
