Governor Timothy Kaine says opponents of a gas tax increase should remember that there's already a recent precedent for such action by the General Assembly. Kaine plans to call a special session in June to deal with the state's transportation problems. He said Tuesday on his monthly show on Washington radio station WTOP that all possible solutions are on the table. The House Republican majority opposes a statewide gas tax increase. But Kaine said a transportation package passed last year and later ruled unconstitutional included an increase in Hampton Roads, setting a precedent for at least a regional increase. A caller suggested increasing the gas tax only on weekends to get more money from out-of-state travelers. Kaine called that a novel idea but said it might be difficult to administer.
