Loney Leads Dodgers Past Rockies In 10

(Sports Network) - James Loney grounded a single through the right side of the infield in the 10th inning, scoring Rafael Furcal with the game-winner as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies, 3-2, to sweep the three-game series at Dodger Stadium.

With the game knotted at 2-2 at the end of nine, Colorado attempted a to get something going with one out in the 10th. After Matt Holliday grounded out to short, Garrett Atkins and Brad Hawpe singled, putting runners on first and second. However, Troy Tulowitzki grounded out and Jeff Baker popped out to end the inning.

LA would end the game in the home half. Manny Corpas (0-2) walked Furcal and Mark Sweeney to lead off the inning. Following a sacrifice bunt by Matt Kemp that moved the runners to second and third, Corpas intentionally walked Russell Martin to load the bases. Loney then grounded an 0-2 pitch through the right side of the infield to end the game.

NewsChannel 8 myTAKE - What's Your Opinion? "It felt great just to be in that situation," Loney said. "I didn't try to do too much. I just tried to get a good pitch to hit. It's a great way to end the series. Hopefully we can keep this energy up."

Furcal finished 2-for-4 with a run batted in, while Kemp chipped in with a pair of hits for the Dodgers, who have won five of their last seven.

Esteban Loaiza got the start for LA and allowed two runs on five hits over five inning of work. The veteran right-hander struck out one and walked a batter. Joe Beimel (1-0) earned the win by pitching a scoreless 10th inning.

Willy Taveras and Todd Helton each had a pair of hits and an RBI apiece for the Rockies, who have lost seven of their last eight. They lost in 13 innings Friday night.

Jeff Francis got the nod for Colorado and pitched seven solid frames, giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out six and walking three.

"Two tough losses," Francis said. "I think everybody feels that there's more they can do to help the team. There's no question about it. We feel we had a good chance to win two of the three games here, but came out empty-handed."

With the game scoreless, the Dodgers broke through for a pair of runs in the fourth. Blake DeWitt tripled with two outs and after Chin-Lung Hu was intentionally walked, came around to score when Loaiza lined a single to right to give LA the 1-0 lead. The Dodgers tacked on another when Furcal's run- scoring single plated Hu.

Taveras' two-out RBI double in the fifth and run-scoring base hit by Helton tied things at 2-2.

Colorado had a great scoring opportunity in the eighth. Helton led off with a walk and Holliday reached on a throwing error by Hu, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. Atkins then grounded out with the infield in and Jonathan Broxton intentionally walked Hawpe to load the bases. The big right- hander then got a struggling Tulowitzki to ground into a double-play to end the inning.

Tulowitzki finished 0-for-5, dropping his batting average to .157 on the season.

The Rockies put two on with two outs in the ninth, but Helton flied to out to left, ending the threat.

After Juan Pierre grounded into a double play to end the bottom of the ninth, the game went into extra innings.

Game Notes

Attendance was 50,670...LA will open a three-game series at Florida on Tuesday night, while the Rockies start a three-game set at San Francisco on Monday...Despite the loss, Colorado is 7-3 over the last 10 matchups with the Dodgers.
