A judge has denied a request by District of Columbia taxicab drivers for an injunction to block the implementation of a time-and-distance meter fare system.
D.C. Superior Court Judge Brook Hedge ruled earlier this week that Mayor Adrian Fenty has the authority to order the city's nearly 7,000 cabs to switch from zones to meters.
At a hearing Friday, an attorney representing a group of cab drivers argued for an injunction until an appellate court hears the case, which could be another two or three weeks.
Beginning June 1, drivers without meters will be fined each time they are caught. Taxi inspectors will conduct spot checks and the police department will assist them.
