A D.C. police officer shot a man who attacked him while on duty Wednesday evening in Northeast, police said.
Investigators said plainclothes officers assigned to the 6th Police District were conducting an operation in the 5800 block of Field Place, NE, at the time of the shooting.
Shortly before 6 p.m., police said a suspect attacked the cop and tried to take his gun. When that happened, the suspect was shot once in the left side of his stomach.
The 36-year-old suspect is in serious, but stable condition in the ICU at Prince George's Hospital Center. He has been charged with assaulting a police officer while armed.
The officer, a seven-year veteran of the force, was not physically injured. Police are not releasing his name because of the assignment he was on.
The incident remains under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department (web|news) .
